These notes are less about rules and more about understanding what your plant needs. Most houseplant problems come from too much care, not too little — overwatering is the most common cause of decline.

Watering

the most common source of trouble

water when the top inch of soil is dry

push your finger into the soil — if it comes out with damp soil clinging to it, wait a few more days. most tropical houseplants prefer to dry out slightly between waterings rather than staying constantly moist

overwatering is the leading cause of plant death

yellowing lower leaves, soft stems, and a sour smell from the soil are all signs of too much water. if in doubt, water less — plants recover from drought faster than from root rot

water thoroughly, then let it drain

when you do water, water until it runs freely from the drainage holes — this flushes salt buildup and ensures the whole root zone gets moisture. never let a pot sit in standing water

succulents and cacti need far less

in summer, water every 2–3 weeks; in winter, once a month or less is often enough. the soil should be completely dry before the next watering

Light

matching the plant to the window

bright indirect light suits most tropicals

a spot a few feet from a south or east-facing window, where the plant gets good light but no direct sun on its leaves, works well for aroids, ferns, and most of what we grow

direct sun burns tropical leaves

the bleached or crispy patches you see on a Monstera or Philodendron are usually sun scorch — move the plant back from the window or filter the light with a sheer curtain

succulents and cacti want full sun

a south-facing windowsill with several hours of direct sun is ideal — without enough light, succulents stretch and lose their compact form

low light slows growth, it doesn't stop it

most tropical houseplants tolerate lower light than you'd expect — they'll grow more slowly and produce smaller leaves, but they won't die. a north-facing room is fine for pothos, ZZ plants, and cast iron plants

Soil & potting

what the roots need to thrive

drainage is more important than nutrients

a well-draining mix that doesn't stay soggy is the single most important factor in root health — we use a blend of potting mix, perlite, and orchid bark for most of our aroids

repot when roots fill the pot

roots circling the bottom of the pot, or growing out of the drainage holes, are a sign it's time to move up one pot size — not two. too large a pot holds too much moisture and invites root rot

spring is the best time to repot

plants are entering their active growing season and recover quickly from the disturbance — repotting in winter stresses a plant that's already in a slower metabolic state

cacti and succulents need gritty, fast-draining mix

a cactus-specific mix, or regular potting soil cut 50/50 with coarse sand or perlite, prevents the moisture retention that causes rot in desert plants

Humidity & temperature

recreating the tropics, gently

most tropicals prefer 50–70% humidity

South Florida homes are naturally humid, which is one reason tropical plants do so well here — if you're in a drier climate, grouping plants together or placing a tray of pebbles and water nearby raises local humidity

avoid cold drafts and air conditioning vents

tropical plants dislike sudden temperature drops — keep them away from exterior doors, drafty windows, and direct air conditioning airflow, which dries the air and chills the leaves

misting is less effective than you'd think

misting raises humidity briefly but doesn't sustain it — a humidifier or a pebble tray is more effective for plants that genuinely need high humidity, like ferns and calatheas

most houseplants are comfortable at room temperature

between 60°F and 85°F suits the majority of tropical houseplants — below 55°F, most will stop growing and some will show cold damage

Common problems

what to look for and what to do

yellow leaves usually mean overwatering

if the yellowing starts on lower, older leaves and the soil has been consistently moist, reduce watering frequency and check that the pot has adequate drainage

brown leaf tips mean low humidity or inconsistent watering

crispy brown tips on otherwise healthy leaves are usually a humidity or watering rhythm issue — increase humidity and try to water on a more consistent schedule

small flying insects in the soil are fungus gnats

fungus gnats breed in moist topsoil — letting the top inch of soil dry out between waterings breaks their lifecycle. a layer of coarse sand on the soil surface also deters them

sticky residue on leaves is usually scale or mealybugs

inspect the undersides of leaves and stem joints — treat with neem oil or isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, and isolate the plant from others while you treat it

Post-Delivery Care

some stress after delivery is completely normal

changes in climate, light, and handling during transit can cause temporary leaf droop or minor discoloration — this is not a sign that something is wrong. give your plant a few days to adjust before drawing any conclusions

place your plant in the right spot first

before doing anything else, find a location that matches your plant's light and watering needs — a stable, appropriate environment is the single most important thing you can do during the acclimation period

allow a short adjustment period before changing its routine

resist the urge to repot, fertilize, or heavily prune right after arrival — let the plant settle into its new home for two to four weeks before making any major changes to its care
